1. Tips for the first UPS charging
To fully charge the newly bought UPS, it must be inserted into 220V mains power supply and charged for at least 12 hours.Otherwise, the accumulator’s actual available capacity will be greatly lower than its nominal capacity.When kept idle for a long time,it must be properly placed, and started for 24 hours every 2-3 months; in addition to fully charged, it must allow its inverter to work for 2-3 minutes so as to insure its normal service life.
2. Proper selection of UPS installation site
A good installation site of UPS is very important for the safe operation of main unit. Where UPS is placed must be well ventilated, kept away from watersources,inflammable/explosive/corrosive gases, with ambient temperature maintained at 22℃±3℃. In case of installation/use at temperature below 0℃, condensed water droplets may occur.When ambient temperature exceeds 25℃, every 10 ℃ temperature rise will halve the battery’s service life.
UPS shall not be placed on its side, and its air inlet/outlet must be well ventilated. To connect any load to UPS, the loads shall be turned off before connection and loads turned on from large size to small size. Never connect UPS to any inductive loads like electric tools or printers to avoid damage.When UPS is connected to special power socket with overcurrent protective device, the power socket must be connected to the protective ground terminal. Whether input power line is inserted into mains power socket, UPS power output may be live.
3. UPS start & close sequence
Correct start sequence is first open USP power source and start up as per the startup procedure, followed by uploading from small size to large size, so as to avoid UPS damage resulted from instant current surge when starting up; while the close down sequence is reverse the startup sequence, shut off all loads before close UPS.When mains power supply is replaced by UPS power source, data and information must be immediately saved before shut down computer; otherwise auto shutdown may be actuated when backup battery is discharging, the battery EOD point is reached.
4. Never allow UPS power source to be kept idle for a long time
Battery kept idle for a long time may enlarge its internal resistance, and weaken its charging/discharging performance.When starting the UPS power source that was kept idle for a long time, it is suggested to allow UPS to charge for 24 hours or above by using its charging circuit before connect it to loads; it is better to allow UPS inverter to work for 1-3 hours once every 3 months for the purpose of activating the battery.Furthermore, the charging current of the battery shall not exceed its maximum permissible charging current.Extremely high charging current will give rise to battery overcharging and its service life shortened.
5. Use of AC voltage stabilizer
After USP used, it is unnecessary for general scenes to add an AC voltage stabilizer.For any scene where unstable mains power supply and a large grid fluctuation are present, an AC voltage stabilizer may be added before UPS to supply power to loads.
6. Prevention of UPS from overload
To safely use UPS, it is required to calculate the load size, to avoid extremely large or small loads. Extremely large load will subject UPS to overload working for a long time, lead to shorten its service life; while extremely small load will subject UPS work circuit to underloading work for a long time, lower its operating efficiency.Reasonable load shall be between 40% and 70%.It is proved that UPS output load kept at about 70% is optimal when the highest operating efficiency is achievable.When overload or inverter fault occurs, UPS will switch to the bypass mode for running, at this time UPS has no backup protection function, the electric power system directly provide power supply for load.
7. Tips for equalized battery charging
At present, many UPS power sources using a valve-regulated lead acid battery are used to be called maintenance free batteries, which bring to users a misunderstanding that this battery seems durable and maintenance-free.In case of terminal voltage lower than nominal voltage specified due to over discharging, the equalized charging is needed for UPS battery.For the12V enclosed lead-acid battery, its nominal cut-off voltage for discharging is 10.5V, battery charging immediately after discharging is needed, no secondary discharging is permissible.When mains power supply is off, 50% battery capacity is suggested to be discharged.
8. Never use diesel generator for long time’s power supply
Owing to its unstable frequency subject to sudden change, large harmonic wave, which are likely to undermine reliable UPS running, the diesel generator cannot be used to provide power supply for UPS for a long time.
9. Real-time monitoring
At present, smart UPS power source has such monitoring functions as remote real-time telecommunication and program control.Communication between computer and UPS power source may be performed by installing corresponding software and connecting to UPS via serial/parallel port or Internet access.In general, such functions as information inquiry, parameter setting, on-time setting, auto power off and alarm are available.By using SNMP card and connecting UPS to computer via a standard cable, the auto power-off function is achievable for UPS when mains power supply is off and at low electric quantity.It may also monitor multiple UPS power sources on multiple serial ports.
