The Application of IGBT Short-circuit Detection Function in Modularized UPS System

 

Background

 

When a certain power module in system malfunctions in modularized UPS system, this power fault module needs to timely exit from system to reduce effect of this fault power module exerted on modularized UPS system so as to ensure stability of output voltage.

 

In R&D process of modularized UPS, our company will undertake multiple single fault tests to guarantee that modularized UPS system could ensure stable operation when single fault of UPS power module occurs. Single fault of inverting IGBT short circuit poses a huge challenge on output stability of modularized UPS system.

 

Working condition of modularized UPS system with only one power module in inverting IGBT short circuit.

 

In case that modularized UPS cabinet is merely inserted with one power module, inverting IGBT of power module is short circuited, output voltage and electric current all decrease. After power module diagnoses inverter failure, it is interrupted and switched to bypass power supply and output voltage restores stability. The interrupted time of output in this process is less than 20mS.

 

Working condition of modularized UPS system with two power modules in inverting IGBT short circuit.

 

In case that modularized UPS cabinet is merely inserted with two power modules, when inverting IGBT of one power modules is short circuited, the voltage is output. Output electric current of the other power module is injected into faulted power module, the remaining one power module output electric current energy is limited, which fails to get output fuse of fault module is blown. Till inverter failure exiting from system of fault module is detected, there exists a certain risk in switching to bypass power supply. The interrupted time of output in this process is less than 20mS.

 

Exclusive IGBT short-circuit detection function of INVT

 

As to above-mentioned problems, INVT adds its exclusively owned electric circuit with IGBT short circuit detection function, it can quickly detect IGBT short circuit state, voluntarily control power module to exit from system so as to ensure that modularized UPS system can maintain inverting power supply when inverting IGBT short circuit fault of single power module occurs and there is no need to be switched to bypass power supply mode. In addition, the interrupted time is less than 10mS.

 

Output voltage waveform of modularized UPS system (equipped with detection function of IGBT short circuit) with two power modules in inverting IGBT short circuit.

 

Two UPS modules equipped with detection function of IGBT short circuit are inserted into UPS cabinet, inverting IGBT of one power module is short circuited. With utilization of fault recording function of power module, power module automatically reserves fore-and-aft output voltage waveform of inverting IGBT short circuit when short circuit of inverting IGBT occurs. The waveform is as shown in the below figure.

Based on waveform display of fault recorder, the interrupted time of output is 8mS, which greatly reduces risk of operating load and power failure.
